Tie Dye Leaf Prints

Today, we took on the craft challenge of creating tie dye leave prints for our Tech Challenge. The process was fun, and simple enough for any student to follow. Here are the steps to complete this challenge.

Materials:
Different colored paint (Tempra best)
Canvas
Leaves
Paintbrush/Spatula
Plastic work surface

Step 1) Find your leaves

Get out in nature and explore the different variety of leaves available in your areas. This could be a great way to teach students how to identify different types of leaves in your area and discuss the biodiversity of the flora near you.

Step 2) Spread the Paint

Using a plastic mat or some other surface that can get full of paint, pour out small amount of various paint colors to start your tie dye swirl. Contrasting colors make great images!

Step 3) Swirl the Paint

Using a paint brush or a spatula, swirl the paint around gently. Don't swirl too much in order to keep the colors separate. The more swirled, the more tie-dyed!

Step 4) Press the leaves

Now, pres they leaves flat into the swirled paint to get it covered. Press gently by downward to get the crevices and frames.

Step 5) Put on the canvas

Press the leaves gently and  thoroughly on a canvas. Starting at one corner, gently lift the leaf to reveal the tie-dye design!

Step 6) Repeat

Repeat this process until you have a great, nature inspired artwork!

Enjoy and have fun exploring the nature around your school!
